I love the song As also, one of Stevie’s best i.m.o. Not sure if the Ponty cover is heard in the actual film Valley Boys or maybe just the preview you posted? And I guess if you sold your copy you may not be able to check. We’ve talked before about how sometimes previews will have music that’s not found in the film itself.

You probably remember this, another instance where this cover is heard in a porn film … Huge 1. After the opening scene in the alley, three of the four guys (Lee Ryder, Brian Spence and Mike Weldon a.k.a. Brian Nichols) go to a clubhouse with beer cans strewn about and pics of nude women taped to the wall. The Ponty cover of As is heard while Lee is fucking Brian on the desk. Other Ponty songs like Mystical Adventures and Rhythms Of Hope are heard later, along with Y.M.O. and Jean-Michel Jarre’s Equinoxe part 7. That’s a great soundtrack to accompany the so-bad-it’s-hilarious voice dubbing and pretty hot sex.

The way Garcia opens his Crotch is straight out of the Garden of Eden, it’s so elegant and natural and fantastically desirable. As if that weren’t enough, he’s accessorized and made of his Perfect Body a sublime Gilded Lily by wearing Collins’s Prick so rakishly in his Mouth. Haute Couture if there ever was any. The most Pleasurable Portrait of a Macho Fellatio I’ve ever seen.

One thing about your blog, BJ: It makes me feel so utterly without culture. I honestly don’t recall ever noticing the music in a porn film. Not enough to remember years later anyway. I guess I was always so distracted by all the sex. What’s wrong with me?

well, i used to see porn in the theaters, wandering the halls and back area for hours, the films playing over and over, so sound, including music, was often more prominent than the film – as it became the soundtrack to whatever I was doing while there…

To me, very little porn-movie music amounts to much, unless it already did–like “Moonlight Serenade” in A Night at the Adonis or “Love Is In the Air” from a poolside scene in some unremembered late 70s movie. I noticed the score, which I think was original, to Adam and Yves, during early footage of Paris, and also 501 had quite a nice score. Scholarship of porn-music is about as arcane and remote as you can get, but that’s cool if it gets you off. I was more like B.J., wandering the theaters to suck and fuck, and sometimes I’d notice it–I think The Pizza Man–He Delivers had some song to go with it. Also the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony for Bill Young in Adam and Yves I remember pretty well. But porno movie music is not exactly a measure of “being cultured”, unless it so happens to coincide with knowing all sorts of other music, dance, theater, movies, etc.

I have noticed in recent years that I don’t notice certain well-known songs or pieces of music in legit movies while they’re going on, when I’ll see them in the closing credits. Probably because of growing up with the slurpy romantic single theme that used to accompany all movies, and recur throughout. But in any kind of movie, the music is an enhancement, not the main point.

I think there was some rather arresting music or song that was used in A Night at Halstead’s, but I’m not sure. There was some sort of deep-leather-bar sound in one of the movies back in the late 70s, that may have been it (but that also sounds wrong.)

Oh, thank you, I love it, and have listened to 3 of them just now. Couldn’t resist “Gidget Goes to Hell”, one of the most hilarious titles ever, and would have liked it even if it hadn’t been clever. Then Bowie sounds great in “Panic in Detroit”, which is also a bit humorous. Best version of “Chapel of Love” I ever heard–I always hated it before.

I can’t believe I was unaware of all these songs in A Night at Halsted’s. I did half live at the Adonis, because it was such Paradise, but they also actually used to show previews of cumming attractions, so it could be I didn’t actually see the whole movie, but a preview. The ones you’ve got on your page aren’t (I think from just looking at the titles) that dark, sinister-sounding thing I remember associating with the movie, but it could be. I’ll keep listening. This is very cool.

And as far as Love Is In The Air goes, I’m pretty sure that The Idol is the film in question. John Karr has been reviewing porn films in the Bay Area Reporter off and on for decades now, I just saw a 2021 article he wrote looking back at his time doing so, and he is quoted talking about The Idol saying …

“All praise to director Tom DeSimon’s [sic] assured 1979 flick, The Idol, a movie I watch whenever I need to be refreshed. In it, Kevin Redding plays an athlete yearning to come out. He mopes poolside where his cousin, Mark Bitler, is going to give him a helping hand, as well as helping mouth and ass (incidentally, this was a first film for both performers; neither one ever made another). Redding is not unwilling, but hesitant. His mouth slowly and apprehensively approaches Bitler’s cock. And the second his lips touch the tip, DeSimone masterfully deploys John Paul Young’s “Love is in the Air.” It wafts in like sorcery (I’ve always wondered if he had the rights). Perfect! We have warm California sunshine, romantically juicy sex, and affirmative music. Made me want to sing along right in the theatre…”

I’ve gone on and on about how much the music in porn interests me, probably too much for poor BJ to keep up with but I know he shares an interest in the use of this music from the period when porn films could still get away with it.
