cruising

pet project that never took off – trying to ID porn stars who appeared as backbroound actors/models in the 1980 film, Cruising .

Malo (AKA Arnaldo Santana) of course (he’s the first victim, so not actually background!); and I am certain Fernando is in the film as well. Anyone else?

I have somehow never seen it. Only short clips. I can’t believe it and I really need to have a viewing.

So, no help here.

Hey, BJ,

Thanks for all of the work you do (and have done) to make this great site. The lust-inducing photos are great, of course, but what I really value is the detailed information that you and your commenters provide. I’m learning a lot.

I can’t imagine that any of what I have to share would be news to you, but because I didn’t see it mentioned in the comments to this post, I thought it might be worth mentioning the cover story of the February 1980 Mandate is about six gay men who appeared in Cruising. The names of the men interviewed are Steve Dasaro, Gene Ford, Kurt Bieber, Clif Coleman, Rod Morgan, and John Edward Burke. I can’t see a way to send an image, but I have page scans and would be happy to share, if you’re interested.

Yours in scholarly brotherhood,
Brett

Well done, Brett!

I looked up the issue you mentioned and it’s a really interesting feature. Kurt Bieber stood out because I recognized his name. He was a physique model who posed for mags like Tomorrow’s Man and Fizeek. I don’t have as many details as I’d like, but I think it was as early as 1959. Then he modeled & performed (very softcore) for Colt in the early days of the studio. He must’ve transitioned to mainstream acting at some point.

I’m a huge fan of Auntie Mame (the book and film) and was excited that he had appeared in Patrick Dennis’ unique photo memoir parody, Little Me.

I’m sure I first read the article in Mandate years ago, but I’m not sure any of it made an impression at the time. Must’ve been before I became fascinated with the physique photography era. So interesting to know that Kurt Bieber (who may have been in his early 40s at that point- and looking damn good) appeared in Cruising and other ’70s & ’80s movies. He clearly reinvented himself at least once or twice.

When Cruising first came out, I think I was too young to appreciate its significance. I came of age at the height of the AIDS crisis, so it was a very different time. My mom used to leave safe-sex pamphlets all over my room!

OK, that’s enough of my rambling. I really just wanted to underline your sentiment about how much we value BJ and all the work he does for us. We love you BJ!

thank you! and sorry for the delay responding. Alas, my copy of this was sold back during the “big move” of 2017 – but I retained a few scans from the magazine – but not the ROY BLAKEY photos of these men! (this is one line from my eBay auction – “The Men of “Cruising” [Kurt Bieber, Rod Morgan] (Roy Blakey) )

so you can email me at bjland (at) gmail.com – thanks
