But I admit I had to look it up, there’s a page within the (outstanding) Houston LGBT History site devoted to Cruise magazine, with many issues in its different iterations that all open in pdf:

Jack Wrangler is on the cover of the 2-78 issue, and has an interview feature. Then on page 5 with the table of contents it reads:
“MAN OF THE YEAR CONTEST – Four days of festivities and great shows came to an end on Thursday, December 15 when Jim Waldrop from Houston, Texas (and CRUISE Man-of-the-Month for July 1977) was awarded the CRUISE Man-of-the-Year trophy and honors during the Grand Finale party on the 4th night at The Sweet Gum Head in Atlanta, Georgia. … See photo on page 101.”
So then you scroll way down to page 101 to see the rest of the pic that you cropped the bottom of, and it names the runners-up anyway: Jim Caspari on the left and Rick Robinson on the right. But these are their real life names, presumably and not the porn aliases they used.
I thought the winner looked familiar before I looked this up, Jim Waldrop was J.W. / Jim King in the center. It does resemble him but without confirming it I’m not sure I would have placed him yet, as he’s not as bulked up as he would become by the time he did porn. Kind of a youngun’ still though certainly old enough to have competed.
I’m not connecting who any of the other guys were though, someone else who is better as recognizing faces may have an easier job with that part.
And by the way, the July 1977 issue with more of Mr. Waldrop / King is on the same site I linked above, with him on the cover wearing jeans and a lovely nude shot of him hanging out as the centerfold.
Most of the mags and periodicals on the Houston site aren’t so much porn as gay newspapers and such (most but not all from the southeast) but there’s some nudity around the edges, and if I’m in the right mood I can spend a long time scrolling through what’s on there. Very valuable resource for gay info of all kinds from the earlier years.
So who was the shortest guy, on the right? I’m wondering if he did porn (since you say at least one other did something) and if so, who and what he did. Not that the guy on the left is bad looking but the shorter guy seems somewhat familiar, and hotter to me.
After coming back to this and scrolling through some more issues of Cruise, am I right that the shorter guy on the right (Rick Robinson) is in fact David Gorsky aka Paolo? Who I only really remember a few things about, you’ve run pics of him before; I always thought he might have been deaf or hearing impaired (not that it matters just a hunch I had); and he was in that hash-smoking scene with Malo, etc. in Dune Buddies?? If so that must be why I thought he looked familiar too.
At the link I left above he was the Cruise cover guy for January 1977, and there are a few more pics of him in their year-end review for December of that year. The January ’77 issue has a short bio, he was from LaGrange, Georgia and was set to appear in two then-upcoming Hand-in-Hand films, Rough Trades and Truckload. Rough Trades is listed on gevi but Truckload isn’t, maybe his scene wound up in another film or collection. I did think he was super hot in Dune Buddies but faded into the background too much, so that the guy with the name that sounded like ‘Dildo’ could be center stage with Malo and Garry Hunt.

Thanks Johnny, I feel like I should have recognized Rick / Paolo / David (assuming that’s him) sooner than I did since I thought he was very hot. But I got there eventually. He was also the guy in the scene with the most other performers in Private Collection, he works for the phone company and a bunch of guys who stop by the office all take turns fucking him. I don’t think I ever heard him talk in a porn movie which is part of why I thought he might be deaf, but whether he was or not he was eager and quite a stud muffin with his beautiful eyes, face and hairy bod. The guy on the left has some nude shots in the December 1977 issue at the link I left above, the dimpled chin might be what leads someone else to identify him as well.
I’m sure it’s him. Rick/Paolo/David is indeed hot. He almost out-shines JW King with that bulge. They look so young!
