Like BJ, I also have my doubts, about the release date of “The Rivermen”. According to GEVI, it was produced, circa 1971. The hairstyles and clothes seem to back that up. Could it really have been on the shelf, for ten years?

The version of The Rivermen I just watched (and reviewed over at reddit) says copyright 1973 at the end, after the original credits with face pics of all the guys. There’s also a Loggins & Messina song called Watching The River Run about halfway through, that was a moderate chart hit and on their 1973 album Full Sail. The film could have been made later (or had the song added after it was filmed) but these clues seem to point to it being 50 years old this year.
I found a full-page print ad in a 1980 issue of the B.A.R. when it was showing at a porn theatre in San Francisco, so when they released it on videotape circa 1981 there must have also been a theatrical re-release that year. Hey BJ, do you remember sleeping / sucking / etc through this one at the Bijou?
As a follow-up to my earlier comment, someone on reddit tipped me off to the name of the theme song (heard again over the closing credits): Love Has Tied My Wings by John Stewart. What’s interesting (to me, anyway) is that this song wasn’t released until 1980, and since that’s the year of the videotape release and theatre re-release, it couldn’t have been heard in the original film. Whereas the Loggins & Messina song, could due to being from 1973, unless they just chose a seven year old song when adding the music.
It makes me wonder how anyone would know what changes happened to the music, between whenever it first came out and the 1980 version, or even if it was shown in theatres pre-1980? Obsessed used the phrase ‘on the shelf’ and that is always a possibility, though as good as it is relative to a lot of the other porn of the early 70s, I’d wonder why it wouldn’t have been put out there when it was made.
