I read his book (was it the bio? I just saw a list of a lot of the books) 2 or 3 years ago, having discovered it at a blog, which seemed to be slowing way down, but had (mostly superior) posts (there were a lot of trashy gossip posts based on that sensationalist about the big names and all the naughty things they did. That blog is called simply <Gay Influence, stuff about Nureyev, Jackie O, Newman and Brando, I didn’t believe must of it and still don’t, they were from a suspect source who’d do anything for money.
It was interesting for such variety of activity, he was even close friends with Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, and loved them. They were prestitious, all right, but I think I could have stayed away, although Hemingway didn’t, and regretted it.
That blog was bad in some ways, but you could get ideas of things to read in true form from it, and he was talking about Scotty Bowers, the mostly straight guy who’d been a marine and was now pimping for big names from a Hollywood gas station. I liked this perhaps better, and he really knew a lot of the biggest stars (and got sucked off by theme), but Steward’s sucking off the whole football team in his home time seemed ill-advised (all of them, not too discriminatory, but then he went to Ohio State, I believe, settled mostly in Chicago and was the tattoo artist in San Francisco. Adventurous life, especially for a total bottom like him. He was saying inane things about cities, of which he thought Chicago was the best, said something about LA I forget, and that ‘New York is a metronome’. Oh well, we all say dumb as fuck things.
I would recommend it, although his adventures are are more interesting than he is. Did get around, that queen.
I think I started to read HIS autobiography some years back, and luckily had the sense NOT to sell that one! (I’ve sold so many porn / gay related stuff I should be ashamed – or thankful I didn’t have to pack and move it all – another topic). If you mean the biography SECRET HISTORIAN – I think I’ve long meant to get it, or had it, or sold it, but in any case, I think I will take a new look at CHAPTERS FROM, as I remember enjoying it.
BJ, you must get Secret Historian! I found that book to be so fascinating. Samuel Steward was such a pioneer. Gay history pre-Stonewall is so fascinating.
