HY CHASE (to do)

Hy Chase, a photographer from the 1970’s, who I’ve come across most often in IN TOUCH magazine, has very little info online. I’ve had his name in my drafts folder (which is back up to 89!), and this is my “place holder” to remind me to do more research. Alas, I sold this publication in 2004!

My intention is only to help you in your quest, to figure out more about Mr. Chase so I hope at least some of these links pan out in your future searches, if you haven’t seen them already that is. A total of six, we’ll see if that is allowed or exceeds the maximum # of links for comments here. First up I saw these two posts at your old pal (or is that arch-nemesis? hopefully the former) retro studs:

and

There’s this blog that doesn’t seem to have updated since 2013 but it’s still online, “hilly blue” that I ran across that has two posts with pics that he says were also taken by Hy:

and

Also another blog I found not long ago, “vintage male models from the past” that has pics of Jayson McBride, who went by J.J. McGrade when Hy photographed him: “From IN TOUCH FOR MEN SPECIAL EDITION No. 2 magazine (1975) Photos by Hy Chase”

https://vintagemalemodelsfromthepast.blogspot.com/2021/07/jj-mcgrade-aka-jayson-macbride-gay-porn.html

(which also has some pics of Jayson when he was much younger that I had never seen before)

Finally, could this be right? Someone named Hy Chase has an imdb page:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1561431/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t533

… who had some bit parts on TV between 1968 and 1971. Maybe acting was another profession he did around the time he started photography, do you have more bio info about him?

excellent!!! good start, and i was just putting together another post that had HY CHASE as the photographer, also from IN TOUCH magazine – seems he did a lot of work for them. would be cool to get info about him – that might mean READING…. and I had forgotten the Bruce Morgan pics, I have seen those – must be before COLT got a hold of him?

the IMDB also has a “thanks” to him on the Jack Wrangler – so maybe that is the same guy??!

good leads – thanks!

Sure thing man. I found one more link after I sent this message, I’ll copy the pertinent part:

“Box 15 Hy Chase circa 1970-1979
Physical Description: 1 photographic print.
Historical Note
From 1973-1978, Hy Chase photography was featured in In Touch magazine. In the late-1970s, he photographed most of the male models featured in the Janus series of publications. Source: In Touch for Men, Hy Chase Special magazine.
Scope and Content
Images include the following models: Signed photograph, Tony Sappling (Tony Sappinton).

(I found it by doing CTRL-F and searching Hy’s name here)

I noticed that imdb said he was thanked in the credits for Wrangler’ Anatomy as well, that seems like it must have been for photographing Jack at some point as well so it must be the photographer Hy. Still unknown if the Hy from those couple of TV shows and films was the same guy.

I saw this too! The remark about Janus magazine gives me another avenue to explore. I own none, but have some eBay scans on the harddrive.

I know the photography but I didn’t know the photographer. I think I’ve heard of Hy Chase here or there, but the mag scans I have don’t credit him at all.

I have the Satyr Publications’ “Derek” Vol4 No1, “Blu” Vol4 No1 and “Bruce” (not numbered). Also, “Scott” Vol4 No3, “Kevin” Vol4 No2, “Randy” and “Hud” by Janus Studios. I never knew this was the photography of Hy Chase.

These mags were all published in 1978 or 1979. I suspected that Satyr and Janus might be related because the design layout in all these mags is so similar, but really I only know what I see in the mags. Now I know the connection is Hy Chase.

I love being educated!
