10-1/2

who you may remember from such films as

It always made me giggle that they always included the “10-1/2” ins his name – Marc “10-1/2” Stevens I don’t recall him having any appeal for me, but I believe I own both Marine Furlough and Michael, Angelo and David – should I give these a look?

and who knew? he was a writer!
“In 1975, he wrote 10½, the first autopornography about what was only the beginning of his career in the porn industry and dealt largely with his film experiences. His second book was Making it Big published in 1977 and covered more of his personal life.”

God, what an incredible, and sad story. I didn’t know anything about Marc Stevens before yesterday. Once I started reading the Rialto Report’s oral history, I couldn’t stop. Now I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes.

I remember reading the rialto piece on Marc a few years ago, and it had a similar effect on me in that I basically dove right in and read the whole thing in one sitting. They do some impressive in-depth articles about the porn industry of the 70s/80s and some of them are riveting. As a gay guy I do wish that they devoted as much attention to mostly or exclusively gay performers as they do to the straight side, or maybe someday someone will start a similar site for the gay porn wing. If you search the word ‘gay’ on their site it does yield a few results, including a long read about Centurians Of Rome and the bank heist that funded it, as well as a shorter article (but with many cool pics!) about the house on Fire Island from the final scene in Boys In The Sand.

There was a restaurant in the Village in the 70s that had a bulletin board. Once when we were waiting, I spotted a slip of paper with a drawing (very sexy, better than the real thing) of a Prick on it, and the telephone # of Stevens. Sometimes I’d see him on the street, he usually looked pretty drugged, but not quite as ugly as the pic above. There was also some movie with him and someone else on the roof, maybe even in b & w, he and some other guy were talking about such lovely things as “head-fucking”. There was also an article or interview with him from way back (Georgina Spelvin days) in Hustler. I thought he was creepy.

That movie with him on the roof was just recently unearthed in a collection of 16mm film prints by ASK ANY BUDDY curator Evan Purchell. I believe it was called HOT AND HEAVY, directed by straight porn director Joe Davian.

Yes, a bit of it comes back. I was obviously at one of the theaters, but hadn’t gone there to see that.

That “business card” also included the “10 1/2”, quite a thing to do on a conventional resto bulletin board, but it titillated us a bit in itself, since so brazen to put it there. I think I knew who he was then, but hadn’t seen him in any film or on the street.

Once he also raffled himself off, and a friend bought one of the raffle tickets, acting as though he would know how to be ‘above it all’ and didn’t buy it hoping he’d get to suck. Whatever, maybe he did or didn’t, but the whole thing seemed pretty tacky to me, and I never heard anything more about it.

I guess he was mostly forgotten by the mid-70s, when John Holmes took over the slot. At least I don’t remember him after about 1974-5.

He sure had a nice piece. I just discovered the movie Marine Furlough. Does anyone know who played Mr. Egan in the office scene?

Not a very flattering photo of Mr Stevens. I can’t find a better one. Also I didn’t really try too hard. His dick is indeed impressive though. His scene in Marine Furlough looks hot.

Marc Stevens isn’t exactly for me either. Although if I met his dick alone in a dark alley or better yet a gloryhole, we would definitely have some fun.

Thanks, BJ!

You can safely pass on MICHAEL, ANGELO AND DAVID. I just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and aside from being the first “Francis Ellie” film it has little worth recommending, though if you want to see Marc actually engaged and into his sex scene (he was pretty notoriously flaccid throughout his straight porn career), you can find that here. Historical value only. The most interesting gay films on his filmography are currently lost: HEADMASTER, made by future horror director William Lustig and co-starring straight porn star Jamie Gillis, and THE RIGHT NUMBER, a modestly-budgeted NYC melodrama starring Keith Anthoni.

Anyone anywhere in the world have a copy of, or ever even seen, Mark Stevens’s first gay film, Pygmalion? Asking for a friend who apparently appeared in it.
