Does anyone know if Barry Hoffman is still alive? I know he is bisexual and lived for a short period of time with the author of Midnight cowboy James Leo Herlihy, and was the inspiration for the character Joe Buck. Barry also had apparently spent time in jail or prison, and also modeled under the name Jeff Reardon.
As I’ve said before, I find Barry Hoffman endlessly fascinating, though I don’t consider myself a fan.
A few years ago, I started a rather lengthy thread about him, on the now defunct, Atkol Forums. The owner, Jeff Satkin, was so generous! He gave you all the space you wanted, to write and post pictures. Sadly, he died in March 2017 – R.I.P.
Before my thread, I wasn’t aware that Barry, aside from posing for Target Studio, also posed for Colt. A wonderful responder by the name of Faffy, informed me of this. Upon some investigating, I found out he was right. This picture that you’ve posted, also confirms this fact.
This picture below is probably my favorite glamour shot of him. One can’t deny he had a powerful, compelling presence. He looks so raffish and dashing! It now makes sense that this is from Colt, and not Target. Jim French also used this Arizona desert background, for the 1973 loop, “Breakdown!†with Ledermeister, Erron and Tom.
There was also, another Colt picture of Barry that actually conveyed some affection, which I posted. I wish I could find this very rare, color still. It has Barry posed, standing next to an unknown guy, with brown hair. The brunet guy is actually kissing Barry on the forehead.
I’m certain it’s this guy below, from the same photo-set. I wish this black and white still, was larger. It fascinating and amusing how both Colt and Falcon, would photograph Barry with blue eyes, when they were actually brown in reality. It was probably an attempt to soften his image.
Barry did quite a few pictures with Old Reliable. I basically share your opinion of that studio. I have to say though, that I’ve developed a late respect and appreciation, for David Hurles, the owner. You got to admire his devotion to his particular obsession. It’s the same thing with Dirk Yates, and his obsession with military men. Both of them had a unique vision – fascinating!
David Hurles would also photograph regular porn stars, not just street trade. I find this picture of Eric Ryan, both interesting and amusing. He’s obviously impersonating, an Old Reliable model. Check out the sneering, hat, and attitude. Ryan was never like this in his regular porn movies. : )
Surprisingly enough, I actually really like the pictures Barry did for Old Reliable, in the ‘80s. Faffy informed me, that this was the time period, in which he posed for them. In this color picture, he has a sleazy glamour, and a ravaged handsomeness. His hair looks especially nice.
I also like these two black and white OR photos. Since he posed so often, he went through a fair amount of hairstyles, which generally, always looked good on him. The exception was the mullet, in his very last photo.
I’m guessing it was in the ‘90’s or later, that his looks started to deteriorate, as he aged. Were drugs, smoking, or alcohol involved, or was it just the result of hard living?
But hey, he still was a porn icon! It’s amazing that he was posing in the nude, throughout the era of some four or five decades! Who else has done that?
Another responder to my thread, mentioned that he did an interview for an AMG video, where he discussed his time in prison, among other interesting tidbits. His name was Scrapple. Have you seen this video?
I’ve never heard his speaking voice. Have you? I’m curious what it sounded like. Was it low or gravelly? Did he have a Southern accent? Inquiring minds want to know. : )
